FAQs about DBT & DBT Skills Groups:

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy offering powerful tools to help you cope and thrive day to day. It teaches four core skills—mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—to help people better manage emotions, cope with stress, and improve relationships.

  • No—this is a DBT skills training group provided online from Mississauga, Ontario. It focuses solely on teaching the core DBT skills in an experiential, group-based format—not the full DBT model, which also includes individual therapy, phone coaching, and team consultation. If you are interested in supporting your DBT learning with personal therapy, you can pursue individual therapy also to delve deeper into your personal issues and receive that one-on-one support.

  • Individuals experiencing emotional dysregulation—such as stress, anxiety, or relationship challenges—without chronic suicidal or self-harm behaviors often benefit significantly from standalone skills training.

Important: If you are currently struggling with suicidal thoughts or engaging in self-harm, a full DBT program or crisis support may be more appropriate than skills training alone. Please reach out right away for immediate support. In Canada, you can dial or text 988 for the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7. You can also go to the Emergency Department of your local hospital or call 9-1-1 if you are at imminent risk.

  • We will meet weekly online for 8 weeks. Interventions taught each week are tailored to group and individual needs. Should you wish to continue with your DBT skills training, you can register for subsequent groups where we will continue learning new skills and/or repeat skills for mastery.

  • No—this online group focuses solely on skills training. It does not include individual therapy, crisis coaching, or consultative support, which are part of the full DBT model. Individual therapy can also be undertaken while participating in the group should you wish additional support and more individualized care for your particular situation and issues.

  • Each week you will join the online meeting via the link provided. Meetings are hosted on our secure platform which is used for all online therapy and group offerings at our clinic. You have the option to have your camera on or off during the sessions. We begin each week with a grounding, mindfulness exercise, a check in for the previous week’s homework (yes, there’s homework!) - and then the new skill for the week is taught and homework assigned for the following week.

  • Homework is an important part of DBT skills training because it helps you practice the skills in real-life situations between sessions. In group, you’ll learn techniques like mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—but lasting change comes from applying these tools outside the group.

By completing homework (sometimes called “skills practice”), you:

    • Strengthen your ability to use DBT skills when you actually need them

    • Build confidence in managing emotions and relationships

    • Notice patterns in your thinking and behavior more quickly

    • Get feedback and support from the group and facilitator on your experiences

Think of it less like “school homework” and more like real-world practice—the bridge between learning the skills in group and living them in your daily life.

    And yes - it’s mandatory!
